Portland Rising Bus Tour Supports Workers’ Rights

Workers and activists got on the bus June 30th to support workers’ rights all over the Portland area.  In a meticulously planned and executed all day bus tour, supporters went to seven actions to support workers’ rights.  June 30th was important because thousands of workers had collective bargaining agreements expiring that day.

150 union members and community supporters boarded three buses at 9:30 am.  We joined other workers at each of the seven stops along the way.  Every action had its own unique flavor and creative twist.  In between stops, participants were briefed on the next struggle and got a chance to practice chants and songs.

The buses’ first stop was a Georgia Pacific facility, represented by the Inland Boatman’s Union/ILWU where contract talks have been stalled.  The owners are the infamous Koch brothers, so a piece of the action was singing “I’d Like to Buy the Kochs a World”, as well as a delegation to the employer.

Stop 2 was the Vancouver, Washington Hilton hotel, across the river, where workers are trying to raise

When Public Transit is Under Attack, Central Florida Transit Riders Stand Up and Fight back!

Over several months, Central Florida Jobs with Justice has been engaging bus riders in the fight to save transit services.  A key bus route from Kissimmee that stops at  2 major hospitals, a bus transfer center and shopping mall was facing a potential cut in the last run of the night. Hospital and Service industry employees that depend on the bus would have had no way to get to and from work. When Lynx asked for public comment on this potential cut, CFJWJ mobilized riders to make their voices heard against this change.  People filled out comment cards with a simple demand …Don’t Cut Route 18! After 2 weeks of collecting comments and bringing awareness to this issue, the route was taken off the list of potential cuts.

Coming up in the next few months, Public Transit Riders in Central Florida have a huge fight on their hands.  Lynx transportation is looking into cost-cutting options in order to deal with a $9 million budget shortfall for the 2011-2012 fiscal years. This is the same yearly problem due to the lack of dedicated funding sources for the bus service.  On April 7th, the Lynx Board will begin the discussion on

1,700 Long Island Bus Workers Win Union Representation!

Over 1,700 Long Island bus workers won union representation last Friday after the workers launched a strong organizing drive with Teamsters Local 1205. The victory is the result of a hard fight by the workers, the union, and their allies.  The employer, Baumann Bus, was in strong opposition to the union.

The workers—drivers, driver assistants, and mechanics—began organizing in the spring of 2009 and formed organizing committees in their nine different yards.  The workers’ reasons for wanting a union were strong: they were not paid for the hours worked, were spending a large portion of their personal paychecks on health care, and experienced degrading workplace conditions.  When the employers got word that the workers were organizing, they started attaching anti-union letters to their paychecks, boldly stating, “Don’t sign up with the Teamsters—tell them we don’t want them around here!”

The workers filed ten unfair labor practices with the National Labor Relations Board before November 1st, 2009.  The charges include: spying on workers who are speaking to one another about the union; telling Latino and Haitian workers that they must be U.S. citizens to vote in the union; and scaring the workers into believing that if a union is voted in, the
