“Public” Enemy Number One

In the latest round of their strategy to divide and conquer working people, the right-wing has launched an attack on workers in the public sector, aiming to pit them against workers in the private sector (at least after pitting them both against immigrant workers in all sectors).  Unable to shake the worst economic crisis since the Depression, Republicans  – and yes, some Democrats  – are hell-bent on shifting the blame away from their allies on Wall Street who continue to bring in record profits, and instead focus their malice on public employees.  Demonized as lazy, overpaid bureaucrats, teachers, firefighters, bus drivers, librarians, sanitation workers, and millions more are being put on trial for the crimes of investment bankers, hedge-fund managers and the handful of finance sector executives who have actually made money on the backs of the laid-off, foreclosed-on workers.

You do not have to be a lifetime activist to see through the muck on this one, this battle is over who controls the basic livelihoods of the overwhelming majority of the country: working people or corporations.

In order to unite and fight back, working people must fully understand the different battlefields of this attack.  Corporate fat cats, led by

Help us fight Scrooge’s corporate agenda

Yesterday we announced that Senator Mitch “puppet of the rich” McConnell was elected our 2010 Scrooge of the Year.  McConnell led a small minority in the Senate to block many laws that would have helped working families this year:  health care reform, job creation, the DREAM Act, health care for 9/11 responders, and so much more.  McConnell could have shown great leadership to support people in need at a time when so many are struggling, but this Scrooge doesn’t care about governing or making this country a better place to live.  McConnell’s goal is to do whatever is necessary to hoard power for himself, his party, and his wealthy, powerful friends.  But Jobs with Justice is building power every day to fight the corporate agenda.

Please make a donation to the Jobs with Justice Education Fund today to help us keep fighting corporate agenda in 2011.

You can give on our secure online donation website or give securely through Causes on Facebook.

In 2010, while McConnell was threatening to filibuster legislation that would benefit working families, Jobs with Justice was educating members about

Stop Shut-Downs. Stop Lay-Offs. Stop Corporate Greed.

The fight-back is growing

Whirlpool refrigerators.  Hugo Boss suits.  Toyota Corollas. What do they have in common?

They’ve all been made by U.S. workers who will soon lose their jobs — if the corporate CEOs get their way.  All these major corporations work hard (and spend a lot) to promote a positive corporate image.  But they all plan to shut down their U.S. plants and shift production overseas — devastating our communities and taking advantage of workers abroad – even though these plants are profitable.  If Corporate America gets its way, good jobs with benefits and economic security will be a distant memory.

But the fight back is growing.  Jobs with Justice coalitions and our partners vow to make every plant shut-down costly and to challenge every major lay-off until we win Full and Fair Employment and a New Economy that Works for Everyone.

Last week, JwJ joined the AFL-CIO and IUE-CWA in challenging corporate greed at Whirlpool in Evansville, IN.  Thousands of workers and community residents delivered 70,000 petitions to Whirlpool, protesting Whirlpool’s plan to send these jobs to Mexico — after taking millions of dollars in federal economic stimulus funds.

“We’re sending a message to Whirlpool and the
