And the winner is…

This years Scrooge of the Year is Rob Walton!

The vote was close and went up until the last minute, but across the nation people made their voices heard – and Rob Walton is the biggest Scrooge of them all! A quick reminder of why Rob Walton was given this nomination:

Deemed a “billionaire bully” by Brave New Films, Rob Walton is the Chair of Walmart’s board of directors.  His estimated net worth is around $21 billion. As a family, the Waltons control 49% of Walmart stock, and are predicted to gain a controlling share in the next 12 months. The Waltons are the richest family in the United States, with a combined net worth is $93 billion. The Walton Family has as much wealth as the bottom 30% of American families combined – more than 35 million families. Waltons make up 4 of the 11 wealthiest people in the United States according to Forbes Magazine, and they could give more than $4,700 to every resident of New York and still have $1 billion left over. With the economy as it is, that would make a huge difference!

The family’s dividends from their Walmart stock alone are more than $2

Help us fight Scrooge’s corporate agenda

Yesterday we announced that Senator Mitch “puppet of the rich” McConnell was elected our 2010 Scrooge of the Year.  McConnell led a small minority in the Senate to block many laws that would have helped working families this year:  health care reform, job creation, the DREAM Act, health care for 9/11 responders, and so much more.  McConnell could have shown great leadership to support people in need at a time when so many are struggling, but this Scrooge doesn’t care about governing or making this country a better place to live.  McConnell’s goal is to do whatever is necessary to hoard power for himself, his party, and his wealthy, powerful friends.  But Jobs with Justice is building power every day to fight the corporate agenda.

Please make a donation to the Jobs with Justice Education Fund today to help us keep fighting corporate agenda in 2011.

You can give on our secure online donation website or give securely through Causes on Facebook.

In 2010, while McConnell was threatening to filibuster legislation that would benefit working families, Jobs with Justice was educating members about

Senator Mitch McConnell Elected 2010 Scrooge of the Year

Health & Pharmaceutical Industry, Hyatt runners-up in national contest to determine who did the most harm to workers and their families this year.

Senator Mitch McConnell took 42% of the thousands of votes cast in Jobs with Justice’s eleventh annual national contest to determine the greediest, most cold-hearted person or company of the year.  A small number of Senators, led by conservative Senate Minority leader Mitch “puppet of the rich” McConnell, have spent this Congressional session aggressively blocking almost all legislation from passing, especially laws that would help working people. McConnell could have shown great leadership to support people in need at a time when so many are struggling, but this Scrooge doesn’t care about governing or making this country a better place to live.  McConnell’s goal is to do whatever is necessary to hoard power for himself and his party.

“We hope that by being elected national Scrooge of the Year, Senator McConnell will see the ‘Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come’ and understand the dire consequences that his actions will have for generations of Americans,” said Sarita Gupta, National Jobs with Justice Executive Director.

Express Scripts Takes Steps to Correct Scroogey Behavior

Workers at Express Scripts, Inc. facilities in Bensalem, PA – members of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania – voted overwhelmingly on December 9th and 10th to ratify a settlement agreement that will preserve approximately 400 jobs at the Street Road facility, reversing the pharmacy benefit manager company’s announcement of plans to shutter all of its Bensalem operations.

In addition to maintaining most of the company’s workforce at the Street Road facility in Bensalem, the settlement provides a substantial severance package to approximately 500 workers facing layoff as a result of the closure of the Marshall Lane facility and some downsizing at Street Road.

No mistake about it – it’s a very sad state of affairs that many people who helped build ESI are still being laid off.  But through the power of workers sticking together and engaging in a national campaign to garner support and pressure Express Script, the union was able to save 400 good jobs and win an excellent severance package for laid-off workers that most non-union workers might only dream about.  “The support we got from the community, other labor unions and people across the country was overwhelming,” said Pam Rogers, President of SEIU Healthcare PA.

Bah, Humbug! Nominate the Scrooge of the Year

Scrooge Fat CatThe holiday season is fast approaching, and around here that means one thing: it’s time for our annual “Scrooge of the Year” election!

Starting today, Jobs with Justice national is accepting nominations for the greediest, most cold-hearted company, CEO, or politician of the year for our eleventh annual “Scrooge of the Year” election.

Nominate your candidate for the 2010 National Scrooge of the Year.

Last year’s  Scrooge of the Year was the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for their narrow, radical agenda advocating for anti-worker, profit-focused solutions to the broken health care, labor, and environmental systems.  Other past winners of this dubious honor include:  WalMart, George W. Bush, and the Wall Street executives who broke our economy.

We’ll pick the top nominees and start the national Scrooge of the Year election shortly after Thanksgiving.  Be on the lookout for the start of the national election and keep an eye on your inbox to see if your local Jobs with Justice coalition is planning a party to elect a local Scrooge.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Elected 2009 Scrooge of the Year

The Chamber’s narrow, radical agenda advocating for anti-worker, profit-focused solutions to the broken health care, labor, and environmental systems garnered them the most votes for the national Jobs with Justice “Scrooge of the Year” award.

Thousands of votes were cast in the Jobs with Justice annual contest to determine which greedy, cold-hearted organization or person deserves the title “Scrooge of the Year.”  Voters chose the Chamber of Commerce as their winner this year as it’s became increasingly clear that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has developed into a front group for a few narrow interests, not a membership association that represents the voice of mainstream American businesses.  The Chamber has spent millions of dollars lobbying against legislation that would benefit workers and families like the Employee Free Choice Act, health insurance reform, paid sick days, and environmental regulations.  Their extreme positions have led some companies and local chapters of the Chamber to disaffiliate from the national group.

This year’s Scrooge contest pitted the Chamber of Commerce against Bank of America, nominated for their role in the sub-prime lending crisis and failure to extend credit to small businesses, Hyatt Hotels for their Scrooge-like firing of 100 housekeepers in Boston and other

    Bank of America

Bank of America had a hand in the worst of the subprime lending excesses, providing financing to the four of the top five largest subprime lenders during the years prior to the crash including Countrywide Financial, Ameriquest, New Century Financial Corp, and First Franklin.  Between them, these four firms issued over $320 billion in subprime loans from 2005-2007. As a result of these kinds of abuses, Bank of America helped crash the economy and then needed a bailout.
